Guitar Lessons In Albuquerque,Corrales, Rio Rancho, New Mexico

Private Guitar Lessons

I’ve been teaching the guitar to students of all ages for 31 years and playing the guitar for 43 years. I enjoy helping people make music. Whether it’s a beginner learning for the first time, an engineer or mom making time to learn the songs they love, or the player with years of experience who wants to fill in the knowledge gaps, I enjoy seeing people improve! I believe anyone can play the guitar and have never met anyone I couldn’t teach. The main requirements of the student are desire and commitment. If you stay with it, you will improve, guaranteed.

Teaching Style/Background

I’m comfortable teaching many styles of guitar and  electric bass. I am well versed in improvisation and music theory. In fact, I taught music theory/ear training at College of Santa Fe for many years. My formal education is a Master’s degree in classical guitar; my informal education is a lifetime playing/performing rock, country, blues, norteno, and other styles.

I teach in a very laid back manner; I believe a student will learn much easier if they are not intimidated by a teacher. My primary goal is to have a student playing something as soon as possible, often in the very first lesson. Technique is important; music theory is important. For a first-time player, however, nothing is more motivating, affirming, even exciting, as playing a melody or riff for the first time, so I try to make that happen as soon as possible.
I teach in a comfortable 2 room studio in my home located in the Albuquerque westside area. The lesson takes place in the recording area and across the glass the rehearsal area also doubles as the waiting room.

Student Performances

Student performances became a big part of my teaching about 20+ years ago. What started with a dozen students playing solo in the back room of King Music store has become 60+ kids performing onstage at the new Cleveland High School theater in Rio Rancho. Combining my guitar students with my electric bass students and drummers and vocalists, I create a backup band for each student. I then rent a hall, hire a soundman, lighting tech, and an MC to create a truly fun, exciting, and educational experience for my students and their families.

Scheduling

Currently, I am available throughout the week including weekends. I usually have students committed to a weekly schedule but I have many students meet with me by appointment as their schedule permits. Please e-mail me through my contact page to work out a time.
